RHT Law warmly welcomes our new Equity Partner, Mr John Wang as well as Legal Associate Ms Chong Li Lian into Litigation & Dispute Resolution Practice.
Mr Wang and Ms Chong have joined us from Robert Wang & Woo.
Mr Wang has been in practice for about 13 years and his main area of practice is in commercial litigation and arbitration. He has acted for multi-national companies, public listed companies, a major property REIT, private companies and private individuals.
RHT Capital obtains approval from the SGX as a continuing sponsor

RHT Law congratulates RHT Capital Pte. Ltd. on obtaining the approval-in-principle (AIP) as a continuing sponsor on Catalist from the Singapore Exchange (SGX), with effect from 26th August 2011.
Managing Partner Tan Chong Huat, and Partners Lawrence Wong and Billy Lau have also received the AIP as Registered Professionals under RHT Capital.

Under the care and support from sponsors of Teen Challenge (Singapore), marginalised offenders, ex-offenders, teens and families are better able to assimilate back into the community. RHT Law is dedicated to giving back to society and is glad to play a part in such causes.
Children's Cancer Foundation as RHT Law's adopted charity

The Children's Cancer Foundation (CCF) and RHT Law signed a memorandum of understanding on 2nd August 2011 to formalise the adoption of CCF as the Firm's principal charity. The Firm is committed to giving back to society, and plans to organise various fundraising events, such as a charity golf fundraiser in 2012, and to also encourage staff to volunteer and participate in CCF's activities.
Executive Director Ms Chee Wai Yee represented CCF in signing the memorandum.
RHT Law organises first media cocktail

RHT Law hosted members of the media at a cocktail session on the 2nd of August 2011, at the Singapore Cricket Club. The event was attended by more than 10 members of the press who were eager to hear more about the directions forward for RHT Law, as well as her future plans.
Managing Partner Tan Chong Huat stressed that RHT Law is not a new law firm but comprised senior and experienced lawyers. She is led by her 5 Senior Partners and is a people centric, caring, and business driven firm. Striving to be a local international law firm, RHT Law will work with international law firms to expand the offering of international capabilities and networks to clients.
RHT Law soft launch and celebratory lunch

RHT Law commenced business on Saturday, 28 May 2011.
The soft launch was heralded through the opening of the firm's office premises at Six Battery Road by former Court of Appeal Judge Mr LP Thean. Staff and their families were invited for a tour of the new premises which was followed by a celebratory lunch at the Singapore Cricket Club.
RHT Law and RHT Group of Companies currently have the strength of over 100 legal professionals and staff.
RHT Law Movie Night for staff, families and friends

RHT Law will be organising its annual Movie Night at Golden Village Marina on 14th July 2011, the opening night of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. Staff, families and friends of the firm are invited to participate in the 'Be Potter-ised' photo contest which will have a Halloween-in-July effect, with wizard hats and wands expected to make their appearance in a bid to win 5 pairs of GV movie tickets.
RHT Law will also present the pledge book in support of Saferoads.sg during the movie night. The nationwide campaign promotes road safety in Singapore, and is organised by Automobile Association Singapore, Singapore Road Safety Council and People's Association, and is supported by the Traffic Police.
Cases handled by Criminal Practice Partners featured in the news

RHT Law's renowned Criminal Practice team comprises Senior Partner Subhas Anandan and Partner Sunil Sudheesan. The news covered three of their recent cases on:
- The alleged abuse of a taxi driver and the passengers, and hijacking and crashing of the taxi by three Caucasians;
- Alleged conspiracy between owner of now defunct Brookes Business School, an education agent, and students to obtain fraudulent study loans from banks; and
- A 14 month sentence for a hawker who hit a drink seller on the right forearm with a ladle, causing a fracture. Their client could have been jailed up to 10 years and fined up to $10,000.
S-chips accounting irregularities a problem to worldwide Exchanges

Partner Lin Song from RHT Law’s China Practice provided comment on the recent concern from regulators worldwide regarding accounting irregularities surrounding S-chips listed on various exchanges.
He highlighted that companies in China are generally more focused on growth than corporate governance, and while there are laws in China against commercial crimes and fraud, enforcement is still not up to scratch as local governments tend to protect local businesses.
Promoting intellectual property laws to the general public

The Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) is stepping up efforts to bring intellectual property (IP) closer to the people, through an integrated campaign optimising both online and offline activities to engage the general public.
Partner Jonathan Kok from RHT Law’s Intellectual Property & Technology practice observed that there has been an increase in local companies having basic knowledge of IP law and the importance of protecting their own IP locally and overseas.
Companies Act's review – Auditors concerns

The Ministry of Finance (MOF)’s proposed changes to the Companies Act includes deciding against a requirement for auditors to disclose to shareholders the reasons for their resignation due to concern over defamation, amongst others.
Partner Lin Song from RHT Law’s China Practice shared that while it is possible that lawsuits against audit companies signing off on Chinese companies’ financial statements could happen in Singapore, it is difficult for investors to have a strong case if auditors followed internationally recognised standards but could not spot accounting irregularities due to management’s sophisticated fraud or collusion with banks.

Partner Sunil Sudheesan from RHT Law’s Criminal Practice was commended for his commitment to clients in an article mentioning a case where he secured an acquittal in a murder case on appeal. His client was eventually sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment.
Sunil continues to act for the less privilleged on a pro-bono basis, and was awarded one of the two Subordinate Courts’ Volunteer of the Year (Advocate & Solicitor category) awards in 2010. |
